Martian announced today that its popular Martian Watch is now compatible with the WhatsApp Messenger and LINE apps on Android smartphones with firmware update v1.43. WhatsApp Messenger and LINE are mobile messaging apps that allow you to exchange messages without having to pay your service provider for SMS. For those trying to untether from SMS charges on their smartphone bills, this is welcome news.
On smartphones using Android Jellybean 4.1 or higher, WhatsApp allows notifications to appear on the Martian Watch OLED display with the date of notification, the sender’s name and corresponding message. In addition, if you turn on “text-to-speech” in the Martian Watch Alerts App, incoming messages will be read to you automatically … a very nice touch when your hands are otherwise occupied.
All versions of Android allow LINE notifications to appear on the Martian display with the date of notification, the sender’s name and message. And, like WhatsAPP, text-to-speech functionality is also available via the Martian Watch Alerts App.
In addition to the foregoing feature enhancements, firmware update version 1.47 also provides compatibility with the following operating systems: Windows 8 64-bit, Windows 7 64-bit and 32-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows XP 32-bit, Mac OSX 10.7 and 10.8 64-bit. It is nice to see the coders at Martian have been burning the midnight oil to provide additional features and enhanced value for early adopters of their smartwatch line.
